A Positive Approach to Health

Moving Beyond the "Absence of Disease" Definition of Health

In much of the world the accepted concept of health primarily emphasizes the absence of physical disease. Although there is validity to this view, it does not enable us to completely evaluate our health. The Integral framework, by contrast, gives us a positive definition of health that highlights the presence of well-being in all 4 quadrants, at all levels, in all lines or capacities, and in all states and types of being.

In the following video, Rob McNamara, personal coach, trainer, writer, teacher, and Senior Consultant for Philips Performance Nutrition, shares just such a positive approach; one in which we view our individual being from the inside and out. He instructs us to evaluate our well-being by examining our motivations (both feminine and masculine), feelings, drive, behaviors and capacities. Though Rob does not include the lower quadrants or the entire Integral map, his treatment of this specific component can help us arrive at a "felt" definition of health.
